Welcome to REAL Science at North Carolina State University!

Research Experience & Active Learning (REAL) in Science is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute funded project designed to immerse NCSU biology students in an authentic, engaging, transformative science experience during the early stages of their collegiate careers. This funding has allowed for the development of several programs, including RISE, Research PackTrack, SCALE-UP Biology, and Citizen Science Outreach. RISE

Research Experience for Incoming Freshmen. A summer program to get research experience before classes begin.

NCSU-HHMI Program Goals

  • Increase the interest and participation of all types of learners in scientific research early in their undergraduate career, especially women and other underrepresented minorities.
  • Improve the training that students receive in research skills prior to conducting independent scientific research.
  • Increase the amount of time undergraduate students spend learning about and conducting research investigations.
  • Increase the number of faculty mentors who invest their time in supervising undergraduate research.
